Choose Gijang-eup for the more practical rail-and-market base; choose Ilgwang when quiet beach time is the reason for staying this far east. Both sit on the Donghae Line, but they solve different trips. Gijang reduces everyday errands, while Ilgwang makes the shoreline part of the stay.
Gijang keeps essentials close
Visit Busan places Gijang Market about a six-minute walk from Gijang Station. That compact relationship suits travelers who want breakfast choices, provisions and a direct station walk before exploring the eastern coast. It is also the easier option when luggage, not scenery, will shape arrival and departure.

Ilgwang puts the beach first
Visit Busan describes Ilgwang as a broad, relatively gentle beach and gives a walking route from Ilgwang Station. The official estimate is about 14 minutes from Exit 1, so a hotel near the sand may not be equally close to the platform. Ilgwang fits slow mornings, shoreline walks and evenings that do not depend on central Busan.

Measure the full Busan day
The Donghae Line map includes both Gijang and Ilgwang, but a rail stop does not make either area central. Count transfers to every fixed plan, especially Busan Station, Nampo, Seomyeon or evening venues. A coast-led itinerary can justify the distance; a city-wide checklist usually cannot.
Protect luggage and sleep
Check the exact walking surface between station and hotel: a beach address may involve a longer outdoor route than the listing suggests. In Gijang, ask for a room away from market delivery lanes and larger roads. In Ilgwang, ask about promenade activity, coastal roads, wind exposure and blackout curtains. Confirm late check-in and luggage storage rather than assuming a small property offers both.
Check before booking
- Plot the hotel entrance against the correct Donghae Line station exit.
- Verify the current train timetable for every fixed departure.
- Count central-Busan transfers across the whole stay.
- Ask which room side faces roads, market lanes or the promenade.
- Confirm evening food options, late check-in and bag storage.
